Event description

The Across the Fence Farming project is about bringing neighbours together "Across The Fence" to learn about nature positive practices that increase biodiversity and make for healthy and resilient landscapes in all climate conditions. We believe, sharing land, livestock, machinery, labour and resources can return subdivided land to prime condition for profitable farming and help to restore biodiverse ecosystems.

Allan Parker head shot

Allan Parker is the Managing Director of Peak Performance Development Pty Ltd, a consultancy company, operating both within Australia and internationally, in the areas of Negotiation, Organisational Change Facilitation, Training and Dispute Management.


Allan Parker’s areas of expertise in training include Facilitation, Negotiation, Presentation Skills, Dispute Management as well as Management and Leadership Development. In consulting, his work has included the facilitation of Public Policy, Organisational Change, Strategic Planning, Corporate Restructures and Mergers with many leading organizations in Australia and internationally.


His clients have included Microsoft in 11 countries, AMP, BNP Paribas in 4 countries, Macquarie Bank in 4 countries, NSW Bar Association, Deutsche Bank, 5 different Ombudsman’s Offices in Australia and New Zealand, The Royal College of Physicians, the OECD and United Nations.


Michelle Young Head shot

Michelle Young - ANU Sustainable Farms Project Director. Michelle was appointed the Director of Sustainable Farms in June 2018.


Michelle is a social researcher with experience in both quantitative and qualitative research. Michelle has held a range of research positions in public health within NSW, conducting evaluations of health promotion interventions and undertaking formative research for new programs in early childhood and maternity.


Michelle has also worked in the Australian Public Service as a social scientist with the Bureau of Rural Sciences and as a policy officer in the Department of Families and Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.


John Feehan Head shot

John Feehan - the dung beetle expert. Every day more than half a million tonnes of dung is dropped onto Australian pastures, locking up nutrients and creating a breeding ground for bush flies, buffalo flies and other pests, but beetle colonies are capable of burying cow pads in 24-72 hours.


When the CSIRO project concluded, John’s private organisation (SOILCAM)  is based in Canberra, where he coordinates the largest and most efficient collection and redistribution of dung beetles in the world.

He has been promoting the management of dung beetles for more than 18 years and has redistributed more than 4,500 colonies consisting of 18 different species to date.


As a result of his diligent research and field work over many years, John is now able to supply the species suitable for particular locations to ensure maximum beetle activity through different seasons.

John is committed to educating the community about the importance of the dung beetle and his work has made an outstanding contribution to Australian agriculture.


Neil Perry Head shot

Neil perry  - Western Sydney University 

Specialises in progressive economics approaches to environmental and ecological economics. His research on the economics of biodiversity conservation, environmental taxation and environmental policy has been published in Ecological Economics, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Wildlife Research, Economic and Labour Relations Review and edited book volumes. Neil has advocated for, and contributed to, progressive environmental policies and environmentally sustainable activities in Australia and the U.S. including being a member of the executive committee of the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium, conducting carbon footprinting for U.S. Colleges and local municipalities, and volunteering for the Union of Concerned Scientists, Friends of the Earth, and the Climate Action Network. He is also a regular contributor to The Conservation on environmental policy and maintaining and protecting the commons.


Lori Gould - Australian River Restoration Centre and Rivers of Carbon.


Lori specialises in riparian rehabilitation projects that focus on engaging the community in improving biodiversity, linking vegetation, addressing salinity, etc. She is the on-ground Program Manager for Rivers of Carbon, a program she and Siwan co-founded six years ago Lori is practical, approachable and a great person to talk to about all things riparian. She is a skilled community practitioner and is always willing to share her experiences with others.


Suzannah Cowley - NVIRO Media: TV Journalist / Film Producer (BA) Communications Broadcast Journalism. 

Suzannah Cowley is a television journalist and film producer with a diverse background of experience in television, film and radio broadcasting. A career as a news reporter in regional and metro TV newsrooms in NSW and Victoria inspired a love of sharing real stories from real people, and inspired passion for the environment leading to the creation of Nviro Media in 2016. 

Now a Southern Highlands resident and producing films on a wide range of environmental and rural issues, Suzannah brings a unique ability to translate a story onto film to engage audiences through dynamic interviews and creative scripting and edit production. Bringing a wealth of television experience working in domestic and international newsrooms allows Suzannah to engage with a wide range of media teams to create exceptional content.
